Cholera: Causes, Symptoms and Ayurvedic Care Explained

What is Cholera?

Cholera is an acute diarrheal infection caused by Vibrio cholerae bacteria, usually spread through contaminated water or food.

Common Symptoms of Cholera

  • Profuse watery diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Dehydration
  • Muscle cramps
  • Rapid heartbeat

Ayurvedic Perspective on Cholera

In Ayurveda, severe diarrheal illness is associated with aggravated Pitta and Vata dosha disturbing Apana Vayu and rapidly depleting the body’s fluids (Rasa Dhatu).

Ayurvedic Lifestyle & Supportive Care

  • Cholera can cause fatal dehydration within hours — Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) and, in moderate-to-severe cases, IV fluids at a hospital are essential and life-saving.
  • Drink only boiled/purified water and maintain strict hand and food hygiene to prevent transmission.
  • Once rehydrated and medically stable, a light, easily digestible diet can support recovery.

When to Seek Immediate Medical Help

⚠️ Medical Emergency: Cholera is a medical emergency. Go to the nearest hospital immediately for rehydration and treatment — this condition can be fatal within hours if untreated. Ayurvedic care has no role in the acute emergency phase and should only be considered for general post-recovery wellness, under medical guidance. Do not delay or substitute emergency medical care with home remedies.
