
Madhumeha is the Ayurvedic name for diabetes which is one of the 20 forms of Pramehas mentioned in traditional literature caused due to vitiation of Kapha and Meda Dhatu along with weak Agni resulting in excessive urination and high glucose level in the blood.
What is Madhumeha According to Ayurveda?
Meaning of Madhumeha is sweet urine. According to Ayurveda, it is described as a metabolic disorder caused due to dominance of Kapha dosha in which poorly digested substances (Ama) cause disturbance in Meda and Mamsa Dhatu and in the end lead to disturbance in Ojas.
Dosha involved
Kapha dosha but if madhumeha is old, it may also have Pitta and Vata dosha involvement too.
Causes (Nidan)
- Consumption of excess sweet, oily and heavy food
- Lack of physical exercise
- Poor functioning of Agni causing improper metabolism of Meda Dhatu
- Hereditary (beeja dosha)
- Stress and poor quality sleep
Symptoms (Lakshana)
- Frequent urination, specially in night
- Frequent thirst and hunger
- Weight change, fatigue
- Slow wound healing
- Sweet urine
