According to Ayurveda, Sandhivata is a medical condition similar to degenerative joint disease which results in joint pain, stiffness, swelling, reduced flexibility and worsening with age, cold weather and physical inactivity.
What is Sandhivata in Ayurveda?
“Sanda” means joint and “vata” means dosha of movements. So, when vata gets aggravated and Sleshaka Kapha (the lubricating substance of joints) gets depleted, joints start to rub and get dried up.
Dosha Involved
Mainly Vata dosha, however in some cases of Sandhivata there is deficiency of Kapha (lubrication) and of Asthi-Majja Dhatu (Bone and marrow tissue).
Causes (Nidan)
- Eating too much dry, cold or vata aggravating food
- Lack of activity or on the contrary excessive strain of joints
- Aging and depletion of Dhatus
- Agnimandya (poor digestion) with consequent formation of ama in joints
- Being in cold and windy climate
Symptoms (Lakshana)
- Joint pain and stiffness, especially early in the morning
- Noise in joints when moving them
- Swelling and limited joint mobility
- Symptoms getting worse in cold and humid weather
Approach in Ayurveda
Pacification of Vata and nourishing of joint tissues with snehana, swedana and basti chikitsa (medicated enema) are considered to be the first line treatment for Vata disorders in classical Ayurvedic texts. Read more about our Sandhivata Nivaran Chikitsa Program.
