What is Giloy?
Giloy, known in Sanskrit as Guduchi or Amrita (‘the root of immortality’), is a climbing shrub whose stem is widely used in Ayurveda, especially for building immunity and managing recurrent fevers.
Traditional Uses & Benefits of Giloy
- Traditionally used to support the body’s natural immune response.
- Used as part of Ayurvedic care during recurring fevers and general weakness.
- Supports healthy digestion and liver function according to classical use.
- Used to help the body recover strength after prolonged illness.
- Traditionally included in formulations for joint comfort.
Ayurvedic Perspective on Giloy
Giloy is considered Tridosha balancing, pacifying Vata, Pitta and Kapha, with a particular reputation for reducing Pitta-driven heat during fever while also supporting Ojas (core immunity) without excessive heaviness.
Ayurvedic Lifestyle & Usage Tips
- Take fresh giloy stem juice or a standard decoction in the morning as advised.
- Combine with tulsi and ginger in a kadha during seasonal infections.
- Use consistently for a defined course rather than indefinitely without review.
- Prefer guidance from a practitioner on dosage during an active fever.
Precautions & When to Consult a Doctor
⚠️ Please Note: Giloy should be used cautiously in autoimmune conditions and is best avoided during pregnancy without medical supervision, as excessive or prolonged use has been linked to liver concerns in rare cases. Stop use and seek medical attention if you notice jaundice, dark urine or unusual fatigue.
